Corretta McNeil

June 28, 1940 ~ November 5, 2020 (age 80)

Corretta was born June 28, 1940 to Robert Calvin and Rosie Lee Holley in Arkansas City, Arkansas, both preceded her in death.  She was the fourth child of eleven children: being raised with nine of those children, two children expired shortly after birth.

Corretta accepted Christ at an early age and was united with St. John Baptist Church, Arkansas City, Arkansas  under leadership of Rev. A.K. Childs.  She attended Arkansas City Schools under the tutoring instructions of Professor and Mrs. J.B. Payne.  As a young woman she was always engaged in the community.

Corretta left Arkansas City in early 1960’s moving to St. Louis, MO for. Short period of time practicing her trade as a barber.  She later moved to Chicago, IL to continue her education and to establish a career.  There she attended Bryant & Stutton Business School.

In Chicago, she met Willie Charles McNeil and they were married in 1967, Willie passed from this life September 2001.  They were blessed with three children, the eldest child, James Daniels, preceded her in death.

The working career she was seeking was found when she started working for the Chicago Police Department; and that career spanned some 47 years, ending with her retirement in 2015.  She was always a hard worker, with much love, concern and committed to helping family.  At one period (11 years) while working for Chicago Police Department, she also worked for McDonalds because she wanted to make sure she had enough of own money to help her mother, sisters and brothers at home.

She had always been involved with the church, and love signing in the choir.  For many years, she was a faithful member of the church and choir of Grace Eden Baptist Church in Chicago under leadership of Rev. John Mosely.  Later she joined the body of Christ at Cathedral of Holy Bible Baptist Church in Chicago, under leadership of Rev. Booker J. Person, where she served in different ministries with love and vigor, especially in her servant position as personal nurse to the Pastor and his family.

After retirement she moved back to Arkansas where in 2016 she united with the body of Christ at Gaines Street Baptist Church (The Church at Gaines Street) under the leadership of Rev. J.B. Minix, Sr.  She was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday school Class, a somewhat outspoken member.  When the pandemic hit and we were unable to attend church services in person, in the building, it was a very difficult time for her; because she loved praising God and going to church.  She reluctantly made the transition to Facebook services, with help from her nephew, but still longed for that personal touch, she was big on hugging.

Corretta leaves to celebrate her life, one son, Milton Hampton of Illinois, one daughter, Jaqueline McNeil-Maroughkas (Christos) of Toano, Virginia, one grandson, Carlitos Chavez, a Godson Steve Martin of Chicago, Illinois, four sisters Kay Brown, Theresa Mitchell (Morris), Gloria McDaniels (Willie) of Little Rock/North Little Rock, Arkansas and Carrie Bryant (William) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas.  One Sister-in-Law, Josie Calvin of Eudora, Arkansas, many nieces, nephews, cousin, church families and friends.

One sister and three brothers preceded her in death.

Many will remember Corretta of that beautiful smile, big hugs and being a smart sassy dresser!  Others might remember her as a compassionate encourager.  However you remember her, please remember, she loved the Lord, her family and friends.

Be not dismayed, whatever,

Whatever betide,

God will take care of you,

Beneath, Beneath His wings,

Beneath His Wings, love abide,

God will, God will take care,

He'll take care of you,

I know He will.
