Curlee Butler, 80 of Pine Bluff, Arkansas transitioned into his heavenly form on the evening of Friday, October 2, 2020. Mr. Butler was born on August 29, 1940 in Pastoria, Arkansas to the late Mr. & Mrs. Clarence and Rosie Butler.
Curlee attended and graduated from Altheimer High School in Altheimer, Arkansas. He later became the first African American Patrol Officer for Pine Bluff (AR) Police Department to complete the Basic Police Course at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Academy and the third African American at Pine Bluff Cotton Belt Railroad to become licensed by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) as a Locomotive Engineer where he also became a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Curlee was a well-known and active community advocate and was solely responsible for getting a natural gas line run in the rural community of Pinebergen.
He began his working career at an early age on the farms and in a community store in Pastoria, Arkansas. His former employers include Oak Flooring, Borden's Milk Company, The Pine Bluff Police Department and ended, retiring after a 30-yearcareer as a Locomotive Engineer for Missouri Pacific Railroad. He was always a very responsible and dedicated worker on every job he held and received numerous promotions.
In 1959 Curlee met Dorothy Richmond at Travelers Rest Missionary Baptist in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. On August 13, 1961 they were joined in Holy Matrimony and remained married until his passing at which time they were married for 59 years. Together they faithfully raised seven children.
Curlee confessed his faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized in Horseshoe Lake in Sherrill, Arkansas. Curlee was a dedicated member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a Deacon and Church Treasurer.
Deacon Butler was preceded in death by both his parents: Clarence and Rosie Butler; Sisters: Altha Lee Hunt Ferguson, Gennie V. Butler, and Ada Lee Perkins.
He leaves to cherish his life and memories: His loving Wife of 59 years: Dorothy Jean (Richmond) Butler. Sons: Maurice(Janice Faye) , Baltimore Maryland; Lawrence Renard (Melat), Carrollton, Texas; Curlee, Jr. (Armenthia) Pine Bluff and Tyrone (Tonza), Texarkana, Texas. Daughters: Marilyn Gable (Harold), Chicago, Illinois; Janice Butler-McGowan, Arlington Texas; Jacquelyn Butler, Frisco, Texas; Rachel Butler-Green, Jacksonville, Arkansas; Sheri Butler, Stafford, Virginia and Vickie Smith- Davis (Obadiah), Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Sister: Treopia Thomas of Chicago, Illinois and 31 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
